Directions to Cross Point Church in Farmingdale and the Chick-Fil-A at Lane's Mill Road

Cross Point Church in Farmingdale

Cross Point Church is located on Squankum-Yellowbrook Road (County Route 524A) in Farmingdale, NJ, about 560 feet northwest (westbound) of the traffic light at Squankum-Yellowbrook Road and Southard Avenue.  There are two driveways; the one nearer the light (about 400 feet from it) is the entrance driveway; the one farther from it is the exit driveway.  There is parking on both sides of the church and in the rear.

CR 524A parallels CR 524, which serves as Farmingdale's two business district streets.

Proceed about 2.5 to 3 miles on I195 West (depending on which ramp you entered I195 by) to the near-side cloverleaf ramp for interchange 31 (31B), following the directions immediately below for Via I195/NJ138.

(As an alternative from the nore on the GSP, exit at interchange 105 for NJ36; turn right at the traffic light just past the toll plaza onto Hope Road South, and proceed for about 0.9 mile to the traffic light for Wyckoff Road. Turn right onto Wyckoff Road, which is known as Shafto (Corners) Road for part of its length, and follow the directions below for From Tinton Falls via Wyckoff/Shafto Corners Road. The intersection with NJ 33 is about 4.8 miles ahead.)

Via I195/NJ138

Turn LEFT onto Squankum-Yellowbrook Road

Proceed east or west as necessary on I195/NJ138 to Interchange 31. Take the cloverleaf ramp for exit 31B for CR547 North. (From the east, a near-side cloverleaf ramp; from the west, a far-side cloverleaf ramp.)

Immediately upon leaving the interchange, bear left for a left turn at the traffic light onto Squankum-Yellowbrook Road. Make the turn and proceed about 2.1 miles to the traffic light at Southard Avenue. Continue straight through the light for about 400 feet to the entrance driveway for Cross Point Church, on your right.

From the North Via US9

Turn RIGHT from Eaton Adelphia Road East onto Squankum-Yellowbrook Road

Take US9 southbound through Freehold. From the intersection with NJ 79, proceed about 1.5 miles soutboundh to the intersection with CR524/Eaton Adelphia Road. Bear right for the far-side jughandle ramp to CR 524 East. Cross US 9 and proceed on CR524 East for about 3.7 miles to the traffic light for Squankum-Yellowbrook Road. Turn right onto Squankum-Yellowbrook Road and proceed about 1.5 miles to the second driveway for Cross Point Church, on your left.

From the South Via US9

West Farms Road East approaching Squankum-Yellowbrook Road

Proceed northbound on US 9 to the interchange with I195. Continue northbound on US 9 for about 1.6 miles, bearing right for the traffic light at West Farms Road. Turn right onto West Farms Road. Proceed about 2.9 miles to the stop sign at Squankum-Yellowbrook Road.

Turn Right from West Farms Road east onto Squankum-Yellowbrook Road East.
From US 9 Northbound, turn right
onto West Farms Road

For an alternate route from the South via US 9, see the directions below for taking Lane's Mill Road from the Chick-Fil-A at Lanes Mill Road and US 9. This will require a right turn onto Lane's Mill Road, about 1/2 mile past the light for Estelle Lane.

From the West Via NJ 33

Take NJ 33, business or freeway, to the place where business and freeway rejoin. Continue for about 2.3 miles to the intersection with Colt's Neck Road. (There is a gas station on the near left-hand side.) Turn right and proceed about 1.8 miles to the tee intersection with CR 524. Turn to the left, entering the Farmingdale business district and follow the directions immediately below.

Travelling Southbound through the Farmingdale Business District

Southard Avenue is a right turn here,
between the telephone poles.

When travelling south through the Farmingdale Business District (eastbound on CR 524) there are two places you may turn to cut across to Squankum-Yellowbrook Road.

The first, and simplest, is Southard Avenue. After turning right on Southard Avenue you can proceed about 3/4 of a mile to the traffic light, turn right, and proceed another 400 feet to the entry driveway of Cross Point Church (on your right).

Railroad Avenue on the right, just before the crossing gates

Railroad Ave morphs quietly into Preventorium Road If Southard is closed for some reason, or if you miss the turn, proceed about another 0.2 mile approaching the railroad crossing. Immediately before the crossing, turn right onto Railroad Avenue. After about 2000 feet, Railroad Avenue almost invisibly turns into Preventorium Road.

Continue on Preventorium Road for about 2100 feet to the stop sign at Squankum-Yellowbrook Road. Turn right onto Squankum-Yellowbrook Road and proceed for about 0.3 miles to the traffic light at Southard Avenue. Continue straight ahead for about another 400 feet to the entry driveway on your right for the Cross Point Church.

From the North via NJ 34

Proceed southbound on NJ 34. Continue past the cloverleaf interchange with NJ 18, travelling about another 3.4 miles to the flying junction with NJ 33. Rte 34 southbound rises over Rte 33 westbound and joins Rte 33 eastbound at a yield sign entering from the left. Less than 120 feet beyond that point, Tinton Falls Road connects on the right.

The best route makes the right onto Tinton Falls Road. (If you cannot reach it due to traffic, continue with the directions below.)

Proceed about half a mile on Tinton Falls Road; Tinton Falls Road meets Asbury Road. Continue straight ahead for another 1.9 miles to the tee intersection with the flashing red light. This is CR 524 in the Farmingdale Business District. Turn left onto CR 524 and make the very first right turn, onto Southard Avenue. Proceed as described above under Travelling Southbound through the Farmingdale Business District.

If you miss the turn onto Southard, proceed to Railroad Avenue as described in that same section. If you missed the turn onto Tinton Falls Road, continue about 0.9 mile southbound on NJ34/eastbound on NJ33 to the roundabout (traffic circle) and follow the directions below for From the NJ 33/NJ 34 Circle.

From the Vicinity of Eatontown and Tinton Falls Via Wyckoff/Shafto Corners Road

Take Wyckoff Road/Shafto Corners Road southbound past Naval Weapons Station Earle and the Monmouth County waste handling areas. About 2.3 miles past the Asbury Avenue traffic light, Wyckoff/Shafto Corners intersects NJ 33 at a traffic light. Bear right approaching the light and turn right onto NJ 33 westbound. Follow the directions for NJ 33 and NJ 66 westbound, directly below. The roundabout (traffic circle) is about 800 feet further along NJ 33 westbound.

From the East Via NJ 33 or NJ 66

Take NJ 33 or NJ 66 westbound. (NJ 66 merges with NJ 33.) About 800 feet after the traffic light for Wyckoff Road/CR 547, NJ 33 enters a roundabout (traffic circle). Continue as immediately below.

From the NJ 33/NJ 34 Circle

From the NJ 33/NJ 34 roundabout, take the exit for CR 547 South to Farmingdale. If you have entered the roundabout from NJ 34 southbound/NJ 33 eastbound, this will be the first exit (and you do not need to enter the roundabout; there is a bypass ramp). If you have entered from NJ 33 westbound, it will be the second exit. If you have entered from NJ 34 northbound, it will be the third exit.

Proceed nearly one mile on CR 547 (Asbury Road) southbound. Asbury Road meets Tinton Falls Road at a stop sign. Turn left at the stop sign and proceed about 1.9 miles to the tee intersection with the flashing red light.

From the Chick-Fil-A at US 9 and Lane's Mill Road

The simplest way from the Chick-Fil-A at US 9 and Lane's Mill Road is to take US 9 northbound following the directions above (via West Farms Road) under From the North Via US9.

It is also possible to exit to the south end of the shopping center (near the Lowes) and turn left onto Lane's Mill Road eastbound. Proceed about 3000 feet to the stop sign at Maxim-Southard Road. Turn left onto Maxim-Southard Road and proceed about 2.5 miles to its end at a tee intersection with Maxim Road. Turn right onto Maxim Road and cross the railroad tracks, proceeding about 0.9 mile to the traffic light at Lakewood-Farmingdale Road/CR 547. Turn left onto CR 547 and proceed about 1 mile to the interchange with I195. Continue on CR 547 through the interchange to the traffic light, bearing left out of the interchange for a left turn as described above under Via I195/NJ138.

Chick-Fil-A at US 9 and Lane's Mill Road

The Chick-Fil-A at US 9 and Lane's Mill Road is in a shopping center at the northeast corner of the intersection, clearly visible from the road. The simplest way to get there is via US 9, using I195 to get to it if necessary (taking the ramp for exit 28A for US 9 South). Lane's Mill Road is about 2.3 miles south of the I195 interchange; bear to the right for a near-side jughandle ramp. (If the jughandle is congested, it may be easier to set up for the left turn onto US 9 North and enter the shopping center from US 9 North.)

If you are coming from the east via the I195 corridor, or coming southbound via CR 547 (from NJ 33/NJ34 or the Tinton Falls area—see directions above involving Tinton Falls Road and Asbury Road) it may be easier to come south on CR 547 via the interchange with I195:

Leaving the interchange of CR 547 and I195 southbound on CR 547/Lakewood-Farmingdale Road, you will approach a traffic light about 900 feet south of the interchange. If there is a line of traffic waiting at the light, it is mose likely waiting for the left turn lane; go around it to the right when you can, going straight through the light (at Old Tavern Road/Herbertsville Road).

After the RR Crossing, turn left onto Maxim-Southard Road.
Maxim-Southard Road approaching Lane's Mill Road. Maxim-Southard
bends to the left. Turn right onto Lane's Mill Road.

Lowes Warehouse storage on your right as you approach the shopping center entrance on the right.

Proceed southbound on CR 547 for about 0.8 mile to the first traffic light at Maxim Road. Turn right onto Maxim Road and proceed for about 1.7 miles to the railroad crossing. Cross the railroad tracks and immediately turn left onto Maxim-Southard Road. Proceed about 2.5 miles southbound on Maxim-Southard Road to the intersection with Lane's Mill Road (see photo) and turn right onto Lane's Mill Road. Proceed for about 0.6 mile, past the Lowes storage racks on the right, to the driveway for the shopping center. Turn right into the shopping center, then turn left after the stop line/stop sign. The roadway curves to the right; Chick-Fil-A is on the left.

Via US 202

For much of its length in northern New Jersey, US 202 parallels I287,and the fastest route is to get onto I287 as soon as possible and continue the trip from there. But if I287 is unavailable for some reason, US 202 provides alternate or bypass routes.

From the North: Take US 202 South to the traffic light for Sylvan Way. Continue straight for 0.6 miles bearing right at the light for NJ 10 for a left turn using the far-side jughandle ramp. Follow the directions above for From the West Via US 10. Ridgedale Avenue is about 1.2 miles from the outlet of the jughandle ramp.

From the South: Take US 202 North into Morristown. The northbound and southbound sides diverge; the northbound side continues on Market Street to the Morristown Green. Turn right onto the Green. Turn left at the first opportunity (around the Green) and bear right to go straight across Dumont Street. Follow the directions above for From Morristown Green.

US 46

As US 46 crosses New Jersey, it parallels I80, closely in some places and at a distance in others. In general, I80 will be the better route, but if I80 is unavailable for some reason US 46 may be an alternate, though not the best. From US 46, there are several reasonable routes south to the Frelinghuysen Arboretum:

Take US 202 South, following the directions above.

Take US 202 NORTH for about 0.3 miles from the center of the US 46—US 202 intersection to the entrance to I287 South (right-hand turn).

Take US 202 south for 0.4 miles. At this point, it turns right onto Littleton Road. Instead, continue straight on Parsippany Road for about 1.6 miles, to the second intersection for N Jefferson Road, this one on the right. Turn right on N Jefferson Road and proceed roughly south for about 2.3 miles to its end on Cedar Knolls Road. Turn left and see the directions above for From the West Via NJ 10, whose route you have just joined.

An alternative is to exit the Turnpike at Interchange 11 and take the Garden State Parkway North either to exit 142A (13.2 miles, for I78 East) or 145 (17.4 miles, for I280 East) as described under From the South via the Garden State Parkway. Another alternative is to continue past Interchange 14 etc., to Interchange 15W for I280. From there, follow the directions for From the East Via I280.)

Take the New Jersey Turnpike North to the right-hand exit ramp for Interchange 14/14A/14B/14C (IMMEDIATELY after Newark Airport on the left). The ramp divides. Follow the side for Exit 14/West I78/US 1/US 9/US 22/Newark Airport/Elizabeth. (The side of the fork depends on whether you are exiting from the inner or outer roadway of the Turnpike.) The EcoComplex's Sign, Hidden by Construction

Rutgers's EcoComplex, from the East

From Burlington, NJ and South and West Via US 130

(Those who wish to stay on US 130 as long as possible may use the directions below for Via US 130.)

Proceed on US 130 North through Burlington. After Logan Avenue and Logan Field ballfields (both on left) move into the right lane. Proceed to the traffic light for Columbus Road/County Road 543. Turn right and proceed about 4 1/2 miles to the tee intersection. Turn right. Proceed about 500 feet; the EcoComplex entry drive will be on your right.

Via US 130 (From Robbinsville and North)

Take US 130 South to the interchange with I195. Take the first ramp, for I195 West. Follow directions immediately below from the east via I195. The interchange with I295 is about 4.4 miles down I195

From the East Via I195

Take I95 West to exit 60a for I295 South. Follow directions immediately below from I295.

From The North and East Via US 1

Take US 1 South to the interchange with I295.  Take the second (cloverleaf) ramp for I295 South. Follow the directions below for via I295.  (Exit 52a is about 15.2 miles south of the US1 interchange.)

From the North or South Via I295

Take I295 to interchange 52. Take exit 52a for Columbus. Proceed to the traffic light for Columbus Road (CR 543) (about 1/4 mile past the last ramp from the cloverleaf). Continue straight through the light for about 500 feet; the EcoComplex entry drive will be on your right.

From the East Via NJ 33

Take NJ 33 westbound to the NJ Turnpike at Hightstown (interchange 8). (There is construction in the area and traffic patterns are changing; the entrance and exit ramps are being moved!) Take the NJ Turnpike South and follow the directions immediately below. The ramps for Interchange 6 are about 15.4 miles southbound from Interchange 8.

Via the New Jersey Turnpike

Take the NJ Turnpike North or South to Interchange 6 (signed for the Pennsylvania Turnpike). Approaching the toll plaza, move to the right. Leaving the toll plaza, take the exit on the right for US 130. Stay to the right and take the ramp for US 130 North. Proceed about 1/3 of a mile to the traffic light and turn right onto Florence-Columbus Road. Proceed about 2.4 miles to the traffic light for Columbus Road (CR 543). Continue about 500 feet past the light; the EcoComplex entry drive will be on your right.

If you are coming from the south, DO NOT exit at interchange 5 intending to connect with I295.  The traffic light at the end of the Turnpike exit ramp is extremely unfavorable.  Often, trucks are lined up waiting for that light, which will turn red before one truck has made the turn off the ramp.

If you are coming from the north: the Rutgers EcoComplex web site provides alternate directions which are shorter by two to three miles when coming from the north, but more complicated and more costly in time during most times of the day. Note though that construction around interchange 6 may make them better if Turnpike traffic is very heavy.

Via US 130 (North and East of Burlington)

Take US 130 (North if you are South and West of Florence; South otherwise) to Delaware Avenue/Florence-Columbus Road (Country Road 636). From the south and west, turn right onto Florence-Columbus road; from the north and west make the left turn (from the left turn lane) onto Florence-Columbus Road. Proceed about 2.4 miles to the traffic light for Columbus Road. Continue straight ahead for about 500 feet past the light; the Rutgers EcoComplex entry drive will be on your right.

From The North Via US 206

From north of Trenton: Take US 206 South to the I95/295 cloverleaf. Take the second ramp (signed I95 and I295 South) and follow the directions above via I295. Exit 52a is about 17.3 miles southbound on I295.

In Trenton: Take US 206 South to I195. Take the ramp for I195 West (To I295 South) (first ramp) and proceed about 2000 feet to the interchange with I295. Take ramp for I295 South (second ramp) and follow the directions above for Via I295. Exit 52a is about 7.8 miles south on I295.

Ramp from US 206 South (from the North) to CR 543

North of Columbus: Take US 206 Southbound to the traffic light at Mansfield road. Continue Southbound. About 0.7 miles south of the Mansfield Road light the highway divides. Move to the right. After about another 0.6 miles, take the ramp signed for County Road 543 At the top of the ramp, turn right and proceed about 1.8 miles to the left turn into the Rutgers EcoComplex entrance drive (from left turn lane).

From The South Via US 206

Ramp from US 206 North (from the South)to CR 543

Take US 206 North past the Columbus Farmers' Market (on the left). Get to the right after the Farmers' Market traffic light and continue on US 260 about 0.9; US 206 becomes a divided highway. About 180 feet further, take the ramp signed for CR 543. At the end of the ramp turn left and proceed for about 1.9 miles to the left turn into the Rutgers EcoComplex entrance drive (from the left turn lane).

From Colt's Neck, Freehold, and Jackson Via County Road 537/Monmouth Road

Take County Road 537 West to the traffic light for New Jersey 68. Turn right onto NJ 68 North and proceed nearly 0.6 miles to the intersection with Mt. Pleasant Road/County Road 543. Turn left onto Mount Pleasant Road and proceed for about 5 3/4 miles, through and past the center of Columbus, where it becomes Columbus Road, to the left turn into the Rutgers EcoComplex entrance drive (from the left turn lane).

From the South Jersey Shore

The New Jersey road net does not provide good access from east to west except in limited corridors. Depending on your location and your familiarity with local roads, your best route may be to take the Garden State Parkway North to I195 or South to the Atlantic City Expressway (from which you can reach I295. Connecting with NJ 33 or County Road 537 may also be an option. From the Matawan area, County Road 3 will link you to NJ 33 and will probably be the shortest route via the Turnpike southbound. If you are nearer to Brick than to Atantic City, taking NJ 70 to connect with US 206 is shorter in miles, but not necessarily in time. Taking NJ 70 past the Fort Dix-McGuire-Lakehurst reservation and connecting through Brown's Mills and Pembreton will shave a few miles off. Just remember that the environmentalists and professional planners will be happier if you don't show up to speak up for your rights!

From Northwest and North Central New Jersey

The New Jersey road net does not provide good access to Florence and the EcoComplex from these areas. Depending on where you are, it may be best to use I80, I78, or I287 to connect with the New Jersey Turnpike, or to take US 206 or NJ 31 south to I95/I295 (but beware of the Flemmington bottleneck). Just remember that the environmentalists and professional planners will be happier if you don't show up to speak up for your rights!

Rudyard Kipling: The Gods of the Copybook Headings

AS I PASS through my incarnations in every age and race,
I make my proper prostrations to the Gods of the Market Place.
Peering through reverent fingers I watch them flourish and fall,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings, I notice, outlast them all.

We were living in trees when they met us. They showed us each in turn
That Water would certainly wet us, as Fire would certainly burn:
But we found them lacking in Uplift, Vision and Breadth of Mind,
So we left them to teach the Gorillas while we followed the March of Mankind.

We moved as the Spirit listed. They never altered their pace,
Being neither cloud nor wind-borne like the Gods of the Market Place,
But they always caught up with our progress, and presently word would come
That a tribe had been wiped off its icefield, or the lights had gone out in Rome.

With the Hopes that our World is built on they were utterly out of touch,
They denied that the Moon was Stilton; they denied she was even Dutch;
They denied that Wishes were Horses; they denied that a Pig had Wings;
So we worshipped the Gods of the Market Who promised these beautiful things.

When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.
They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease
But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "Stick to the Devil you know."

On the first Feminian Sandstones we were promised the Fuller Life
(Which started by loving our neighbour and ended by loving his wife)
Till our women had no more children and the men lost reason and faith,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "The Wages of Sin is Death."

In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "If you don't work you die."

Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew
And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true
That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

Rudyard Kipling's The Gods of the Copybook Headings was published in 1919, even as the horrors of the Great War were beginning to sink in.  It was as prophetic in the interbellum as it is today.

Some of the things it references may be unfamiliar.  The earthy line about the dog, the sow, and the fool is lifted right from Proverbs 26:11.  The various "ages" refer to political or technological ages.  "Cambrian" in this context refers to a pacifist movement that was popular at Cambridge University.  And a 'Copybook' was a workbook with a proverb or maxim at the top of each page.  The student practiced both handwriting and moral instruction by copying it over and over down the page.

But a prophet is only useful to those who have ears to hear.  Keith Stastiewicz at Entertainment Weekly called it "creepy" and "Seussian" when the the last verse was read in an ad for a novel by Glenn Beck.  And in a HuffPo interview with Beck, an interlocutor and ignoramus named Pat said, of Kipling and his Nobel, Suessian sort of prize?  Don't you love that?  This idiot couldn't rhyme.  Pat could have benefitted from some copybook practice himself.

To Ocean Township West Park (Community) Center

The Ocean Township West Park Avenue Community Center is located in Ocean, New Jersey, nominally at 615 West Park Avenue.  In fact, it is at the end of Louise Weltz Lane (at Weltz Park) and just to the right.

Parking is limited (check around the side of the building) but parking for the pool and tennis courts (turning left at sign partway up the Lane) appears to serve as an overflow.

From the West

From the West (coming from Rte 35, Rte 18, Wayside Road or Hope Road) Louise Weltz Lane is the left turn just after the sign.  Although it is not evident in the photos below, there is a left turn lane.

From the East
From the East (coming from Monmouth Road) Louise Weltz Lane is the right turn just before the sign.

Approaching the lane from either side you will see a sign for 615 West Park Avenue.  For the Community ("Rec") Center, continue to the end of the Lane and turn right.

If that parking is full, the parking area to the left may be available for overflow parking.
